BU ZABOON HOUSE

Plans for the conservation and restoration of the Imara’ Bu Zaboon are currently underway.

Imara’ Bu Zaboon was built in the 1940s for the original owner Mohammed bin Jasim Seyadi and was sold in 1949 to Khalil Ismail Bu Zaboon. The new owner used the building as a shop to supply materials to the fishing and pearl diving communities. The original structure of the building consisted of two shops divided by a large doorway opening directly onto the sea. It was in this doorway area that wood used in the construction of dhows and ships was kept for treatment and preparation. In 1963, the ownership of Imara’ Bu Zaboon was transferred to the grandchildren Jassim Abdulla and Ismail, after the death of their father Mohammed. The family business closed in 2000, three years after the death of the grandfather Khalil Ismail Bu Zaboon.

This early 20th centry building with traditional decorative and architectural features will be the home of a restaurant serving exclusively Bahraini food.

AL JALAHMA HOUSE

The conservation and restoration of the Al Jalahma House is currently in its early planning stages. The building was constructed in the 19th century and belonged to the head of the Bahraini Al Jalahma family. The Al Jalahma House is one of the 18 houses that constitute a narrative pathway through Muharraq, illustrating the pearling economy in Bahrain. This path may be recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The renovation of the Al Jalahma House is sponsored by Abdulla Al Masoud.

HOUSE FOR ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

The restoration of the House for Architectural Heritage is a future project of the Shaikh Ebrahim Center. It will provide a home for the drawings and photographs made by architectural engineer John Yarwood during ten years of research into the architectural heritage of Muharraq.

The results of John Yarwood’s studies were donated to and published by the Shaikh Ebrahim Center in 2005 in the book Al-Muharraq – Architectural Heritage of a Bahraini City. The display and exhibition at the House for Architectural Heritage will give the public access to the full and original documents that form the base for this book and function as a reference center for those interested in traditional Bahraini architecture.

The restoration of the House for Architectural Heritage is being sponsored by Gulf Finance House.
